Liverpool face 'massive' games with Villa and Everton after Norwich setback, says Phil Thompson

Liverpool's failure to beat Norwich in the Premier League on Sunday has only increased the pressure on the Reds, according to the club's former captain Phil Thompson. Brendan Rodgers' side could only manage a 1-1 draw with the newly promoted Canaries at Anfield, meaning they have now gone five matches in all competitions without a win. Thommo predicts... Find out what Phil Thompson is predicting for Liverpool v Carlisle in his Sky Bet tips here. However, while Thompson admits his old team were unlucky not to take all three points against Norwich, he also feels that setback has only made Saturday's league clash at home to struggling Aston Villa even more important. "Liverpool were very unfortunate and are obviously going through a difficult time right now," he said. "It was one of those games and while it was a good performance, you feel like they need two goals to really build any confidence and settle the nerves, which are running through the team and the fans right now.

Martin Tyler's stats and facts: Juan Mata's 45-pass goal

Martin's starting stats Ronald Koeman and Louis van Gaal have met each other five times now (PSV v AZ and Southampton v Manchester United) and Van Gaal has won three with Koeman winning the other two. However, as with Super Sunday, the away manager has won all five meetings. I was in the commentary box to see Manchester United's ninth win in 11 visits to St Mary's, but it didn't include a goal from Wayne Rooney. He has gone 11 matches in the Premier League without a goal - the longest streak of his entire career. He has scored five in 12 games against Southampton. The last time Southampton won at home against Manchester United was 2003 with a goal from James Beattie. In total, Southampton have lost 23 of 33 Premier League meetings, conceding 73 goals. Graziano Pelle, who played for AZ under both Van Gaal and Koeman, scored two goals. David de Gea had conceded exactly one goal in each of the last five games against Southampton. He conceded two this time, but was still the hero. In front of him, the same back four had started all eight previous games this season - but Luke Shaw's injury ended that run. A team has scored three in each of Southampton's home games so far - Everton, Southampton themselves (against Norwich) and now Manchester United.

Montpellier 2-3 Monaco: Fabinho's late spot-kick helps seals visitors' comeback

Fabinho scored a controversial penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Monaco came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Ligue 1 basement boys Montpellier. The Brazilian defender sent goalkeeper Jonathan Ligali the wrong way from the spot to cap a second-half fightback and leave the hosts still looking for their first win of the season. Montpellier, with just a solitary point to their name, looked to be heading for three points when they went into half-time two goals up thanks to Daniel Congre's effort and Guido Carrillo's own goal.

Arsene Wenger 'passed up' move for Anthony Martial, says agent

So far he has impressed, averaging a goal every 56 minutes in his appearances against Liverpool, Southampton and Ipswich. Martial has made such an impact in his first weeks in England he already stands on the brink of breaking several scoring records at United. Records in Martial's sights Anthony Martial is on the verge of breaking several Manchester United and Premier League records Arsenal manager Wenger has previously claimed to know all about the player after tracking him from a young age. I am surprised by the analysis of Arsene Wenger, who has apparently been following him since he was a teenager. Rangers v St Johnstone: Team news for Tuesday's League Cup tie

St Johnstone striker Steven MacLean will return to the squad after missing the 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock at the weekend. MacLean, who has scored six goals in his last four matches, was not risked on the artificial pitch at Rugby Park due to concerns over his knee. On-loan Celtic full-back Darnell Fisher is the only doubt and will undergo a late test on a toe injury picked up on Saturday. Rangers manager Mark Warburton has dismissed suggestions that the match is a significant marker of their progress. Mark Warburton has played down the significance of the match "Everyone says it's a barometer. No, it's not. It's the next game," said Warburton. "All the papers are saying it's huge test for us because they are Premiership. We had a test against St Mirren, against Hibs, going to Alloa on their surface was a test, Queen of the South on a different surface was a test and Dumbarton was a test because of the one stand. "We have shown we can deal with challenges. This is the next challenge. There will be a number of challenges this season. Going to Dumbarton in January will be a challenge. We have to deal with all these challenges

Arsenal appear no closer to Premier League glory under Arsene Wenger

After a summer of limited transfer activity, Arsenal’s early season form – including back-to-back defeats – has highlighted predictable problems. Frustration is growing and the pressure is on Arsene Wenger again, writes Adam Bate… Arsenal against Chelsea. The details change but the outcome remains the same. The Gunners have failed to score a Premier League goal against Chelsea since Jose Mourinho returned and haven't beaten the Blues in seven. Arsene Wenger's side didn't come close to doing so at the weekend and while being reduced to nine men is a compelling excuse, one wonders how long the injustice of Diego Costa's fortune will sustain supporters.

Garth Crooks's team of the week: Martial, De Gea, Ivanovic, Vardy

Plenty of goals, plenty of red cards and plenty of controversy. Another normal weekend in the Premier League then. Leaders Manchester City lost their 100% winning record in a shock home defeat by third-placed West Ham, a result which allowed Manchester United to move within two points of their neighbours following a nervy win at Southampton. Defending champions Chelsea avoided a third straight defeat as nine-man Arsenal lost their discipline and the match, while comeback kings Leicester battled back to salvage a 2-2 draw at Stoke and stay in the top four. At the other end of the top-flight, it was a bad weekend for the north-east teams. Both Newcastle and Sunderland were beaten to stay rooted at the foot of the table, with Southampton, Aston Villa and Stoke also in the bottom five. But who were the standout performers? Here's my selection - do you agree? Goalkeeper - David De Gea (Manchester United End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

Crystal Palace will keep on attacking, says Alan Pardew

The bottom line is I want this team to always think about scoring goals. If you are of that mindset then you can't switch to really focusing on a clean sheet. "If we'd lost three games on the trot then maybe we'd start focusing on a clean sheet and start building from there, but we have got good momentum and a good feeling. Our players are smiley and happy and we will go out and try to take the game to Spurs." Pardew hoping to profit Alan Pardew is hoping Palace can take advantage of Tottenham's Europa League exertions Leicester, another team making an encouraging start to the season, have also yet to manage a shut-out, prompting manager Claudio Ranieri to offer his players a pizza for a clean sheet.

Ross County continue impressive start to Scottish Premiership season

Hamilton are now just one point and one place below Ross in fifth after they defeated Motherwell 1-0 in the Lanarkshire derby at New Douglas Park. Dougie Imrie got the better of Joe Chalmers to head an Antons Kurakins cross past Motherwell goalkeeper Connor Ripley and into the back of the net with 72 minutes on the clock. Lucas Tagliapietra thought he had given the Accies the lead in the first half but his effort was chalked off for an infringement, while Ali Crawford smashed a left-footed shot off the crossbar. Shaw flies back to Manchester to begin recovery

Luke Shaw has confirmed that he will fly back to Manchester United on Saturday to begin his rehabilitation following a double leg break. Shaw suffered a broken leg at the hands of PSV defender Hector Moreno on Tuesday in the Champions League following a tackle which former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane dubbed as “brilliant”. The England international is likely to face at least six months out due to the injury, and despite his lengthy lay-off, manager Louis van Gaal said he was ‘amazed’ by Shaw’s high spirits in midweek. Shaw has confirmed that he will now fly back to Manchester to “start my journey back onto the football pitch”, and thanked the Dutch hospital for looking after him.

Liverpool’s Sakho: I feel like a Red

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho says that he “fights every day” to get in Brendan Rodgers’ side after signing a new five-year contract. The French international is yet to start a Premier League game this season but claims he is still “very happy” at the club, despite consternation in his homeland about him committing to Liverpool ahead of Euro 2016. “I feel very good at Liverpool. The coach has a group of 25 players, almost all internationals, he must make choices and we must respect them,” he told L’Equipe. “But I am very happy in this club, in this city, with these supporters. Every morning I am happy to go to training. This club has a great project and I intend to join in. Today, with my extension, I think everyone is happy: The club, me, the fans.” Asked why he had fallen behind Dejan Lovren in the pecking order, Sakho said: “You must ask the coach. I’m ready. When he calls me, I do my job. Everything is going very well. It’s just that there is a fairly large squad…I feel like a Red and accept the decisions of my coach. He admitted he was worried about his international place, saying: “I work to achieve the collective goals of the club but also my individual goals. The Euros is one. I have to give everything to have the most possible game time with Liverpool. I fight every day

Serie A round-up: AC Milan sneak win over Palermo

Two goals from Carlos Bacca helped AC Milan recover from last weekend's derby defeat to Inter with a 3-2 Serie A victory over Palermo at San Siro. The Colombian, signed from Sevilla, flicked home an early opener before Oscar Hiljemark equalised with a header. Giacomo Bonaventura's free kick restored the Rossoneri lead before half-time, but Bacca was needed once again after Hiljemark converted his own brace midway through the second half.

Backing Coutinho to help Liverpool past Norwich

Chelsea v Arsenal Chelsea have not kept a clean sheet all season (including pre-season) and they look unrecognisable from the side that made all the running in the Premier League this time last year. Hilariously, Jose Mourinho has apparently banned his players from engaging in ‘banter’ following their dismal start, a start that has left them languishing at the wrong end of the table. Will prohibiting ‘bantz’ see an upturn in fortunes? Will forbidding Willian to whip an unsuspecting John Obi Mikel with a soggy towel in the showers after training see them across the line against Arsenal? My guess is not. Indeed I reckon Arsenal look a great shout at 29/20 to score twice in this match against a Blues rearguard who seemingly don’t know whether to stick or twist at present. Betting: Arsenal to score 2+ goals at 29/20 (Coral) Aston Villa v West Brom Speaking of dodgy defences, Villa have not kept a clean sheet since the opening day and their second-half collapse at Leicester was pretty horrific (unless you’d backed Leicester, obviously). They have shipped eight goals in their last three matches. Contrast that with the Baggies, who have kept three clean sheets. Big derby game this. The atmosphere will be white hot but my hunch is goals will be at a premium.

Why more British students are taking US soccer scholarships

By Owen Amos BBC News website Six years ago, Dom Dwyer's career was going nowhere. Released by Norwich City as a schoolboy, he entered semi-professional football, turning out for King's Lynn and Staines Town, who play in the Ryman Premier Division. It was there, in the foothills of the English game, that he looked west and decided to move to the United States. Dwyer signed up to a firm who - for a fee - help organise soccer scholarships at US colleges for young, talented British footballers. Getting a scholarship means the college pays some, or all, of the student's tuition fees and costs.Dwyer spent two years at Tyler Junior College in Texas, before moving to the University of South Florida. While there, he was signed by Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City. He has since scored more than 30 MLS goals, was named in the 2014 All Star team alongside Thierry Henry and, in 2015, is on a guaranteed salary of more than £300,000 a year. He is also married to Sydney Leroux, who was a member of the USA's World Cup-winning women's team earlier this year. "It's pretty amazing," says Dwyer. "I'm a little kid from England, and last year I was at the White House [after winning the 2013 MLS Cup]. "I just thought: 'What are they doing, letting me in here?'" Jumping on the bandwagon Dwyer is not the only British player who has gone from US college to the MLS. Matt Watson - who studied at the University of Maryland, after being released by Wolves as a youngster - plays for Chicago Fire. Otis Earle, son of former Wimbledon midfielder Robbie Earle, is at FC Dallas, via the University of California, Riverside. Preston-born Luke Mulholland, who studied in North Carolina, is at Real Salt Lake, while Andy Rose, once a Bristol City youth, went from the University of California in Los Angeles to Seattle Sounders. Few Britons will emulate their careers. But more and more are trying.

Ipswich Town's Ryan Fraser: Dogs, Corsas and the Coffee Club

By Phil Shepka BBC Sport What would a teenager who has moved nearly 600 miles away from his home in the far north of Scotland do to help him settle in? Buy a dog, obviously. That is exactly what Ryan Fraser did when he left hometown club Aberdeen for Eddie Howe's then-League One Bournemouth side in 2013. What has happened to the Cherries since then has been sensational - but Fraser was on the edges of their rise to the Premier League, only making six league starts last season. To aid his development, the 21-year-old winger moved back down to the Championship on a season-long loan to Ipswich, where he has just won the Football League Young Player of the Month award for August, even with his dog back on the south coast. "My dog, Maisie, just gave me something to do after training," he told BBC Sport. "I can come home, take her out and just be a normal person. "I haven't been able to bring her to Ipswich, which has maybe kind of helped me, in a way, to focus on my football. But I've got people down in Bournemouth looking after her, and she's fine." In Maisie's absence, the Scotland Under-21 international scored three goals in seven matches in August, somewhat justifying his move down a division. Ryan Fraser Fraser scored on his Ipswich debut against Brentford in August Flip back a few years, an even fresher-faced Fraser was impressing in the Scottish Premiership, but decided to make the move to Dorset - a decision made possibly too quickly for his parents. "I think I had one day down in Bournemouth," he explained. "I was supposed to come down and look at the training ground and stadium. I signed on that day and I wasn't allowed home. "So my mum and dad had to drive the 13 hours down in the Vauxhall Corsa to help me settle in. But all the lads at Bournemouth were good to me, made me feel right at home and it was quite easy for me to get down and work hard." To help him settle in the area, Cherries manager Eddie Howe took him out for lunch and dinner a few times, and he joined Bournemouth's very own 'Coffee Club', involving a few of his new team-mates. "A couple of us went to Costa every day after training, some of us went to Starbucks in little groups and sometimes you'd all come together and just speak about things happening away from football, like how your families are doing. "It's just nice to get away from football sometimes, just to speak
