The biggest winner of all from the announcement of the firing of Carlo Ancelotti on Sunday is Carlo Ancelotti himself. Being disposed of by Florentino Pérez whether it through straight forward termination of contract, mutual consent or failing to pick up on a new deal, is a fate experienced by some of the biggest and best names in modern management.
The stigma value of an unfortunate Santiago Bernabéu exit is zero. Indeed, the experience can be even be considered a badge of honour, as you have to have been invited to the Real Madrid party in the first place, before being manhandled out again.
Carlo Ancelotti has now won the Champions League three times with two clubs and there would be no real surprise if the Italian coach achieves a fourth with a third. However, if the Italian is true to his word on Sunday, Ancelotti will be taking a year off, potentially to reduce his smoking habit, which most have risen exponentially after two years at Madrid. The now former Real Madrid coach will also be pocketing a year's salary with his contract being terminated a year early.
Unlike José Mourinho, who was given a middle finger farewell by some of the Madrid players and fans, Ancelotti was widely liked and respected at the club and by the supporters. One of his biggest fans was Cristiano Ronaldo, who tweeted after Sunday's 7-3 win that he was hoping to work with Ancelotti again.
A poll of club members published in Monday's 'Marca' said that 73% wanted the Italian to stay. That's partly because of their loyalty to a manager that delivered the Décima, a 22-match winning streak, and never ever rocked the boat or caused a kerfuffle in the press. It's also because there is no viable alternative.
Florentino Pérez, in his announcement of the news of the end of Ancelotti, spoke of the need of a fresh impetus after a season without a win in the three big trophies. After the sacking of Manuel Pellegrini, José Mourinho was waiting in the wings. When Mourinho departed, the much coveted Ancelotti had been line up to take over. There is no dominant figure that could be considered a step up or even sideways for Ancelotti.
The admission from Pérez that a Spanish speaker is preferred potentially rules out the hiring of Jurgen Klopp, the favourite in the same poll given to Real Madrid members, but gives a boost to Rafa Benitez, who would have a huge job in convincing a doubtful fan base.
The winner of a poisoned but well-paid chalice will have to achieve what Ancelotti and everyone else has failed to do in his tenure and that's twist Florentino's cheque-signing arm into bringing in players that the club actually needs, rather than thinks it needs. A lack of solid midfield anchor to replace the departing Xavi Alonso was a gap covered by every player in the team picking up the slack. None more so than Luka Modric, but when the Croatian suffered a hamstring injury in December, the balance of the side fell apart.

Football365's End Of Season Awards
It's time for you to put on your tuxedos and dickie bows as we cordially invite you the Football365 end of season awards. Unless stated, the runners-up are in no particular order. Tell us everything we missed below
Player Of The Season: It has to be Eden Hazard. The most important player for comfortably the best team in the land, and still only 24. Hazard has announced that he wishes to stay at Chelsea for the foreseeable future, which will make Jose and Roman smile the widest of grins. He really could be the best player in the world in three years' time.
Young Player Of The Season: The boy Harry Kane. If we're brutally honest this was an intensely disappointing Premier League campaign, but the rise of a young striker from Enfield acts as the good news story. We can't help feeling that Kane will awake from his dream at some point, but that air of unsustainability only makes us more determined to enjoy it. Thirty-one goals. Thirty-one sodding goals.
Manager Of The Season: For sheer unexpected achievement, it has to be Ronald Koeman. His first season in a new country, the Dutchman was forced to cope with the departure of four of the club's top five appearance makers from the previous season. Their top four bid faded away, but that it was ever a possibility makes his performance a stunning effort.
Runners-Up (in order): Mark Hughes, Garry Monk, Jose Mourinho, Nigel Pearson.
Goalkeeper Of The Season (from our Top Ten): David de Gea

Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard? A question that still divides
The Premier League and English football will witness the end of an era with the close of this season as Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard - two of the outstanding and enduring figures of this generation - leave to join Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy and New York City FC.
For clubs and country, both were permanent fixtures in the nation's sporting psyche, Gerrard with Liverpool and Lampard with Chelsea - the latter's career bookended by his time at West Ham United and Manchester City.
They will leave huge spaces behind them, members of England's "Golden Generation" who may not have experienced fulfilment on the international stage but will never be forgotten for their deeds elsewhere.
So was one better than the other? Both will have their backers and like many debates involving the pair, will there ever be a definitive answer?
The journey to greatness
Chelsea celebrate winning the 2012 FA Cup final
Lampard was part of a squad consistently capable of challenging for the title
Liverpool and Chelsea supporters will make a concrete case for both players being the best - the one-club man who often dragged his team to success single-handed against the midfield maestro at the heart of a string of successes.
While Gerrard, who celebrates his 35th birthday on 30 May, was the constant in a string of Liverpool transitions, Lampard was part of the spine of a series of outstanding Chelsea sides.
Gerrard was Liverpool's iconic leader, the man the Kop looked to in times of stress to produce the moment that made the difference. It was a responsibility he carried with relish.
Lampard, 36, was equally important but, perhaps crucially, he was accompanied by Petr Cech in goal, Ashley Cole at left-back, John Terry as captain and Didier Drogba in attack. He was part of Chelsea's foundations whereas Gerrard was often Liverpool's only stable base.
Terry took the mantle of captain naturally, leaving Lampard to exert his talent elsewhere, but often Gerrard was left to do it all alone at Anfield. Few of Liverpool's recent successes would have happened without his influence.
Lampard had his struggles too, though, and had to show the character that would become his trademark when he suffered heavy criticism in his formative years at West Ham United. He made his debut in January 1996 but some fans were not convinced of his pedigree and believed he was benefiting from his father Frank's influence as a member of the backroom team.
It was only when he moved to Chelsea that he flourished, playing his part in winning the club's first title in 50 years in 2004-05 - scoring both goals in the win at Bolton that sealed the triumph.
Gerrard missed out on the Premier League, the one absence from his trophy cabinet, and will forever regret the slip against Chelsea that pushed the title away from their grasp in 2014, but he won the Champions League, Uefa Cup, the FA Cup twice and the League Cup on three occasions. A wonderful return.
Lampard is a three-time title winner, who won the FA Cup four times, the League Cup twice as well as the Champions League and Europa League.
They were achieved in different, less reduced circumstances to Gerrard, but that does not lessen their merit.
Gerrard was occasionally surrounded by greatness in the shape of Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez and was part of a stellar 2008-09 Liverpool midfield alongside Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso, anchored by the defensive rock of his great friend and fellow one-club man Jamie Carragher.
It will be against these two different contexts, though, that the respective partisan arguments about who was the best of the two will be framed.

Hodgson to name England squad Roy Hodgson will unveil his senior England squad today without Harry Kane after the Tottenham striker was called up to the U21 squad for the European Championship.
England boss Hodgson names his squad for the friendly against the Republic of Ireland on June 7 and the European Qualifier against Slovenia on June 14 at lunchtime at Wembley.
Kane made a big impact in England's last double-header, scoring 79 seconds into his debut against Lithuania and starting in the friendly against Italy three days later.
But the prolific Spurs striker will drop down to the U21s next month for the tournament in the Czech Republic as Hodgson wants him to gain tournament experience.
Wayne Rooney is expected to be named in the squad despite missing Manchester United's draw against Arsenal because of a dead leg, but with Kane unavailable and Danny Welbeck doubtful due to a knee problem, Hodgson is short of options up front.
Saido Berahino and Danny Ings are also in the U21 squad so Hodgson could turn his attention to uncapped forward Charlie Austin, who has scored 17 goals for Queens Park Rangers this season.
Other than the 25-year-old Hoops striker, there are few alternatives. Leicester's Jamie Vardy has barely been mentioned before in England circles, but has played a key role in Leicester's escape from relegation and is in good form.
Hodgson has other injury problems ahead of the friendly in Dublin and the qualifier in Ljubljana seven days later.
Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker suffered a foot injury recently and is unlikely to be picked, Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has a hamstring problem while Luke Shaw of Manchester United will not be picked as he is not fit.
Shaw's club colleague Michael Carrick remains out with a calf injury and England's two back-up goalkeepers Ben Foster (West Brom) and Fraser Forster (Southampton) are out with long-term knee injuries.
Provided he has recovered from the accidental knee to the head he took from his team-mate Joey Barton last weekend, QPR goalkeeper Robert Green is likely to be selected.
Green would play his first international since May 2012 in either of the two games while Ashley Young's recent run of form puts him in with a chance of a recall for the first time in two years and Wilfried Zaha could come into contention after his improvement at Crystal Palace.

Rodgers: I'll miss Gerrard Brendan Rodgers has commended Steven Gerrard on his Liverpool career and says he will miss him "as a man".
Ahead of Gerrard's final game at Anfield after 17 years with his boyhood club, Rodgers assured him of a starting place against Crystal Palace on Saturday and hailed his captain for his service to the team, the club, and the city of Liverpool.
"I will miss Steven Gerrard as a man. I think both our interests are purely devoted to Liverpool Football Club," said the Liverpool manager.
"He will be missed because our relationship is strong, we communicate well and not having him here will leave a huge hole. He’s irreplaceable but we have got to keep moving forward as a club and as a team.
"I asked a lot of my staff to describe Steven in one word and I’d use the word 'Liverpool’. What Steven has given to this city, politicians haven’t given. He's a wonderful symbol for the people and he’s very much about looking after his people.
"Today is about commemorating the career of a wonderful player. He is one of the very few genuine world-class players who is around the game. He played 42 games in my first season, 39 last season and 38 so far this season - that shows his value and importance to me."
Gerrard held his own press conference on Thursday in which he heralded Rodgers and admitted he wished they had worked together long before the former Swansea boss moved to Merseyside in 2012.
Former England captain Gerrard, set to mark his 706th and penultimate appearance for the club, says he would like to return as a coach one day but Rodgers admits this has not yet been discussed.
"It’s not something we have spoken about. Our focus has been on finishing the season strong," he said.

Juventus will travel to Real Madrid with a one-goal lead in their Champions League semi-final second leg after securing a deserved home victory.
Juve went ahead when Alvaro Morata slotted in against his old club after Carlos Tevez's effort was spilled.
Real levelled when Cristiano Ronaldo nodded in James Rodriguez's cross.
But the holders looked out of sorts and slipped behind again as Dani Carvajal tripped Tevez after the break and the Argentine dispatched the spot-kick.
Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri signalled his contentment with the scoreline as he brought on central defender Andrea Barzagli just after the hour and his side limited Real to a clutch of half chances.
Whether Juve's advantage is enough to survive the return leg at the Bernabeu is yet to be seen, but it was a result to relish for the noisy home support as captain Gianluigi Buffon led the celebrations at the final whistle.
Team over individual talent
Juventus made 27 passes in the build-up to Alvaro Morata's goal - a record in the Champions League this season.
Real's goal took Cristiano Ronaldo back ahead of Lionel Messi in the all-time Champions League top-scorer charts. The Portuguese has 76 goals in the tournament to Messi's 75.
Juventus have lost just once in 18 European matches at the redeveloped Juventus Stadium, but this victory, days after they clinched their fourth successive Serie A title, marks the headiest days since they left the Stadio delle Alpi.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti - whose position is subject to the usual end-of-season speculation in the Spanish capital - will know that his side will need to be better in both attack and defence to get through to the final.
Real looked powerless to resist Juve's early momentum and were picked apart even before falling behind.
Arturo Vidal had found a large gap in the visitors' rearguard in the opening minutes, but failed to get a shot off, before Tevez repeated the trick, but not the mistake.
Having shaken off marker Raphael Varane, the Argentina striker shot hard and low across Iker Casillas and the Real goalkeeper could only paw the ball into the path of Morata to finish from a couple of yards.
Even if they were collectively out of sorts though, Real's star-studded line-up always carries danger.

Angel Fabian Di Maria Hernandez Biography
In July 2007, the winger was transferred to Benfica with €6 million fee. In October 2009, he signed a new deal with Benfica to add three more years playing in that Portuguese club. Several moments after that, he became “Argentina’s next superstar”. The next year, in February 27, Di Maria had successfully created his first hat trick by defeating Leixoes SC with 4-0 score.
The summer of 2010 reported that Di Maria would be transferred from Benfica to Real Madrid with a five-year contract for €25 million, plus €11 million in incentives. Somehow, last summer Di Maria had signed a five-year deal with Manchester United for a transfer fee of £59.7 million, the fifth most expensive transfer of all time and the highest fee ever paid by a British club.
Lately, a rumor said that the one of the biggest football clubs in Premiere League, Manchester United, is ready to sell Di Maria to PSG in January. Indeed, Di Maria is interested to play for PSG. The report said that United are willing to flog the £60million-rated wideman, in order to spend the cash on Borussia Dortmund’s Reus.
