Hodgson to name England squad Roy Hodgson will unveil his senior England squad today without Harry Kane after the Tottenham striker was called up to the U21 squad for the European Championship.

England boss Hodgson names his squad for the friendly against the Republic of Ireland on June 7 and the European Qualifier against Slovenia on June 14 at lunchtime at Wembley. Kane made a big impact in England's last double-header, scoring 79 seconds into his debut against Lithuania and starting in the friendly against Italy three days later. But the prolific Spurs striker will drop down to the U21s next month for the tournament in the Czech Republic as Hodgson wants him to gain tournament experience. Wayne Rooney is expected to be named in the squad despite missing Manchester United's draw against Arsenal because of a dead leg, but with Kane unavailable and Danny Welbeck doubtful due to a knee problem, Hodgson is short of options up front. Saido Berahino and Danny Ings are also in the U21 squad so Hodgson could turn his attention to uncapped forward Charlie Austin, who has scored 17 goals for Queens Park Rangers this season. Other than the 25-year-old Hoops striker, there are few alternatives. Leicester's Jamie Vardy has barely been mentioned before in England circles, but has played a key role in Leicester's escape from relegation and is in good form. Hodgson has other injury problems ahead of the friendly in Dublin and the qualifier in Ljubljana seven days later. Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker suffered a foot injury recently and is unlikely to be picked, Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has a hamstring problem while Luke Shaw of Manchester United will not be picked as he is not fit. Shaw's club colleague Michael Carrick remains out with a calf injury and England's two back-up goalkeepers Ben Foster (West Brom) and Fraser Forster (Southampton) are out with long-term knee injuries. Provided he has recovered from the accidental knee to the head he took from his team-mate Joey Barton last weekend, QPR goalkeeper Robert Green is likely to be selected. Green would play his first international since May 2012 in either of the two games while Ashley Young's recent run of form puts him in with a chance of a recall for the first time in two years and Wilfried Zaha could come into contention after his improvement at Crystal Palace.
